Joel graduated from Ohio University's School of Fine Art in the 1970's where he focused his studies on sculpture. Over the decades, his inspirations have included Phillip Evergood, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francis Bacon, and Charles Bukowski. In 2001, Joel founded the Rendville Art Works, a folk art studio and gallery space designed for people with varying abilities. The different seasons of his multi-decade art career have included focuses on paintings, pottery, poetry, and sculpture. While putting an artist like Joel into one category is nearly impossible, the box which most describes him tends to be 'folk artist' as he pulls much of his inspiration from culture and community. His pieces have been featured in shows and art galleries across Ohio including the Sharon Weiss Gallery and the Ohio State Fair. Today, Joel lives and works in Zanesville, Ohio and is a member of the Artist Colony of Zanesville. His three-story, historic gallery is currently open to the public and has many of his current pieces on display.
